After months of sweating under the relentless summer sun, the much awaited and very welcome monsoon showers are finally here. Monsoon, a season that brings out the child in every one of us. The pitter-patter of raindrops against our upturned faces and dancing in the rain without a care in the world is a feeling that has very few parallels. But monsoon is also the season which brings more than its fair share of skin woes. Monsoon equals dampness, and when its damp microbes have a field day subjecting our skin to all kinds of rashes, infections, skin irritations and what have we.
What you need to do is slightly tweak your basic skincare routine. Here are a few tips to help you steer clear of these monsoon woes and keep your skin bright and clear.
1. Wash your face at least 3 times a day using a suitable face wash to remove buildup of dirt and oil and prevent clogging of pores. If you are outdoors and are unable to wash your face then use good quality wet wipes to cleanse the skin. (Sebamed Clear Face Cleansing Foam- for acne prone skin; Cetaphil Gentle skin cleanser-for all skin types)
2.Exfoliate your skin at the end of each day before bedtime. Be sure to use a gentle exfoliator with microbeads, which is formulated for daily use. (Lotus Berry Scrub) Those with acne prone skin avoid any kind of exfoliation.
3.Always use lukewarm water for cleansing your skin. Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils and dries it out so make sure the water is lukewarm.
4.Use non-alcohol based toners after cleansing your skin. These restore the pH-balance of the skin keeping the skin healthy. (Lotus Herbals Basiltone Cucumber and Basil Clarifying and Balancing Toner)
5.Moisturize your skin with the moisturizer best suited for your skin type and condition. The humidity during the monsoons can be very drying on the skin therefore moisturizing your skin is necessary to keep it healthy and supple. (Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture SPF 15)
6.A sunscreen is a must in every season. The UV rays of the sun can penetrate the clouds and cause damage to your skin even when the sun isn’t shining above so and SPF is a must. Pick a water proof formula and reapply every 2 hours or so, especially if you are outdoors. (Lotus Herbals Safe Sun Intensive Sunblock Spray SPF 50- for all skin types); Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock – SPF 50+ PA+++ -for oily to combination skin) ;
Points to remember:
-Drink plenty of water. The humidity during the rainy season increases and you are prone to sweating therefore replenishing lost fluids is important.
-Eat a well-balanced diet especially Foods containing ‘good fats’, as these help in repairing the damage to the skin and also restore the lipid barrier of the skin which is necessary for prevention of dryness.
